If you really think that the government has no influence on the entity they're funding then you've been marinating in the Kool-Aid for too long

About this email

Pressed on how he justifies labeling NPR given its small share of government funding and editorial independence, Musk tells the reporter that anyone who thinks government funding brings no influence has been 'marinating in the Kool-Aid'.

Notes

NPR also reports that in these exchanges Musk said he was relying on a Wikipedia page of publicly funded broadcasters, and that he later tweeted a screenshot of Allyn's April 12 email asking for his reaction, followed by 'Defund @NPR' (a tweet, not archived here).
